Call your legislator to support nuclear safety bills to halt Holtec's evaporation

The 2025-2026 Massachusetts legislative agenda includes nuclear safety bills. We urge you to contact your state representative and senator today to co-sponsor the following bills.  Find your legislator here.

*An Act to improve public health and safety around aging nuclear power plants and high-level nuclear waste dump sites. H.2661/SD2666 [Luddy-Badger/Fernandes] This bill will amend the current civil defense law to include an emergency planning zone of 50 miles around Seabrook and nuclear waste dump sites in Plymouth and Rowe until the waste leaves the site. Currently, there is no radiological emergency zone around nuclear waste dump sites and only 10 miles for Seabrook which reaches into Massachusetts.

*An Act relative to monitoring dry casks of spent nuclear fuel.

H.2488/S.1596 [Luddy-Badger/Fernandes] This bill will require real-time radiation, temperature, and helium monitoring on each dry cask holding high level nuclear waste. Currently, there is no real-time monitoring of the casks.

*An Act/Resolve preventing the discharge of radioactive materials

HD3803/S.540 [Luddy-Badger/Fernandes] The state will report on environmental and economic impacts of Holtec's illegal radioactive airborne discharge via evaporation which will be stopped during the study. [Two different versions filed.]

*An Act defining clean energy

S.2237 [Comerford] This act repeals the state provision that includes nuclear in its definition of "clean energy". Our energy sources must be clean, green, renewable, and safe.
